Is Willpower Infinite?

Ready to flex your mental muscles?

Here's a thought that's been doing some heavy lifting in my mind: What's the real story behind willpower? Is it a finite resource we run out of, or is it more like a skill we can strengthen with practice?

This question, inspired by the insights of Carol Dweck, is something I believe touches many aspects of our lives. Let's dive into this together, exploring the dynamics of willpower and how we might be able to build it up day by day.

Understanding Willpower: Willpower can be as unpredictable as that friend who says they'll help you move but might bail at the last minute. You want to rely on it, but sometimes it just vanishes. Carol Dweck suggests our mindset plays a big role here. If we view our willpower as finite, perhaps that's exactly what it becomes.

The Science Behind Willpower: Here's where things get interesting. Some studies argue that willpower gets depleted, like after a long day at work. But others, propose that we can actually strengthen it.

And here's a fun fact: the part of your brain responsible for this is the anterior mid-cingulate cortex (look it up). Yeah, it's a mouthful, but it's a crucial part of your mental gym!

Building Your Mental Muscle: To beef up this brain muscle, start with small steps – like choosing a salad over fries or taking a quick walk instead of scrolling through your phone. These little wins set the stage for bigger victories. Remember, your anterior mid-cingulate cortex won't bulk up overnight. One of my favorite apps to build this muscle is called “Streaks” and it is the tool we were using with my clients every day.

Willpower in Action: Imagine the satisfaction of finishing a tough project or maintaining a workout routine. That's willpower in action. By training it, you're not just getting better at specific tasks; you're enhancing your overall life. It's about shifting from "I can't" to "I just did."

Obviously, it's easy to sit here and talk about all of this in a blog. We've all been there after a long week of rehearsals and we just want to collapse on the couch! But exploring how to build willpower is something everyone would benefit from investigating.

The Takeaway: So, what are your thoughts? Is willpower something we run out of, or is it a skill we can cultivate?
