Stop Overthinking Your Auditions.

“Overthinking is like sitting in a rocking chair. It gives you something to do but doesn’t get you anywhere.” ~anonymous

Welcome to this week’s Peak Performance Mondays!

As performers, it’s easy to fall into the trap of overthinking—whether it’s analyzing every detail of a piece or second-guessing your choices.

Not only do I catch myself doing this more often than I’d like to admit, I see musicians who are preparing for auditions do it all the time! And overthinking can often disguise itself as “working hard”––don’t be fooled!

But here’s the thing: overthinking can paralyze progress. When your mind gets stuck in a loop, it’s really hard to move forward effectively.

But here’s the thing: overthinking can paralyze progress. When your mind gets stuck in a loop, it’s really hard to move forward effectively.

"Let me just think about this for a minute..."

So, how do we prevent overthinking from derailing our audition strategy and preparation? I’ve put together a few practical strategies that can help you keep your mind clear and focused.

💡 Quick Tips:

  1. Set Time Limits for Decision-Making: Give yourself a set amount of time to make decisions, especially for small choices. This helps prevent endless analysis.

  2. Practice Mindfulness: Take a few minutes each day to practice being present. Mindfulness can break the cycle of overthinking and bring you back to the moment.

  3. Trust Your Instincts: Sometimes, your first instinct is the best one. Learn to trust it and move forward without second-guessing.

Action Item of the Week: Pick one area of your audition preparation where you tend to overthink. Apply one of the strategies above and see how it feels.

For more detailed strategies, don’t miss the PDF and video I’ve included below. The PDF is packed with actionable steps, and the video is an excerpt from a recent Audition Accelerator office hours, offering insights to help you stop overthinking and start performing with clarity.

What the heck is this a drawing of? It's the non-linear path to audition success.

🔜 What’s Next? Next Monday, we’ll explore how to stay motivated when progress feels slow, and what you can do to keep moving forward.

Thanks for diving into this week’s Peak Performance Mondays. Now, trust your gut and go get it done!
