Is coffee good or bad for musicians?
Ok, I've heard this one a lot—
“Should musicians drink coffee?”
By now, you should be able to guess my answer. Musicians tend to view a lot of things as "good" or "bad," but it's a lot more complicated than that.
One thing is certain, if you're relying on coffee to get you through a day of rehearsals or teaching, something isn't right.
Your health is a combination of all of the choices you've made every day for your whole life. If you want to have more energy (whether or not you're a coffee drinker), you're going to need to start making some different choices.
Rome was not built in a day. Your future health depends on what you choose today.
Musicians have been ignoring their health and their bodies for too long, and I want to encourage all of us to start taking better care of ourselves.
Musicians are actually "micro-muscle athletes." Just like "normal" athletes, we're using muscles in highly complex, coordinated ways.
Sadly, we don't take care of ourselves like elite athletes.
Sports coaches remind their teams to sleep well, eat well, and stay hydrated. Are musicians getting that kind of message? I don't think so. Starting with high school, the main message is "no pain, no gain."
And unfortunately, I've seen a lot of colleagues suffer from stress and overuse problems. And almost every musician I know suffers from exhaustion, occasional sleep problems, and aches and pains from practice.
It does not have to be this way.
Join me Saturday, October 1st, 2022 for a free discussion of the health and nutrition issues facing musicians. I'm joined by nutrition expert (and orchestra clarinetist) Stephanie Thompson.
Stephanie's own health issues led her to study functional nutrition and get lots of fancy certifications. These days, she loves showing musicians how to work hard AND stay healthy.
Again, this is free, but you have to sign up to join us, October 1 at 9am PST/noon EST.
If you can't join us, sign up anyway and we'll send you the replay and the handouts.
